Do you remember SOPA? The bill that would give government the right to spy on internet activity without warrant, and let them censor “unwanted” sites by blocking people’s access to them?

Meet its twin. But this time it’s all the more frightening; the House has passed it despite Obama’s threats to veto. And by an alarmingly large margin, at that. CISPA threatens the US constitution’s guarantees of due privacy and free speech, permitting any government agency to access and transfer of vast amounts of data- from internet records to even the content of personal e-mails, and all without obtaining a warrant.

What’s even more disgusting than this bill actually making through the House is some of the arguments used to help it’s passage, and comments made by one of the bill’s biggest supporters admitting the bill helps big business while insulting opposers (whose is also speculated to have personal reasons for wanting CISPA made into law).

This threatens every element of your online presence. From personal emails to general activity, any government agency will have the ability to go fishing without consequence.

Please, PLEASE, sign the following petitions. You don’t even have to be a US citizen to sign most of them or act against CISPA, and please keep in mind that if this shit flies in America, who knows what country might use its example to do it, too.

PetitionAvaaz: Save the Internet from the US

PetitionCISPA is Back: Write Congress

PetitionTell Mike Rogers more that 14-year-olds oppose CISPA
(you don’t have to be a US citizen to sign this)

Twitter: Tweet @RepMikeRogers with your age
Twitter: Tweet @BarackObama and tell him to veto CISPA
Twitter: Tweet reps like @RepDelBene, @GovHankJohnson, @KeithEllison and @GovGaryJohnson and thanks them for acting against CISPA. Look for other reps that have spoken against it, and thank them.

Call your reps: and tell them you strongly oppose the bill. You can look up your reps using the form on the lower portion of this page.

According to this, the alert was issued today but was taken on Tuesday.

It disappoints me that I’ve not seen this more on my dash…

Amidst the Boston Marathon tragedy, can’t let stories get lost.

#syria

This is a verbal warning, if you are interested in news about Syria be warned that the search term from Syria on Tumblr is informed but sympathetically gruesome. As in there are news links and photos but much of it is documentation of the fallen victims of the war.

You have been warned.

——————————————

If you don’t know, the Syrian government has disabled all internet communications in Syria. Wireless telecommunications is also disabled in and around Damascus, Syria’s capital. They were blocking the road to the international airport though some reports are that the rebels pushed back and managed to get the road open.

Here is a recent story by the CBC about day 2 of Syria’s blockout.

Syria Has Disappeared From the Internet | AllThingsD

A few hours ago, Syria, the Middle Eastern country in the middle of an especially bloody civil war, disappeared from the Internet.

The research firm Renesys, which keeps track of the status and health of the technical underpinnings of the Internet around the world, just reportedthat at 10:26 UTC this morning — which, by my watch, would have been 5:26 am ET — effectively all of Syria’s international Internet connectivity shut down.

More technically, what happened was that within the global routing table, all 84 blocks of IP addresses assigned to Syria have gone unreachable. That means that Internet traffic destined for that country is going undelivered, and also that traffic coming from within it cannot get out to the world.

Renesys is still investigating what’s going on, but, as we’ve seen in other countries, cutting off the Internet is usually meant to try and control the flow of information to the world. It’s also a pretty sure sign that the regime of Bashar al-Assad is either getting nervous about how it is being perceived in the world, or that it is planning something unspeakably harsh in the coming days and wants as little information emerging from that country as possible.

This is not good.

Pregnant in Auschwitz: Holocaust survivor recalls split-second decision that saved her and unborn son
Miriam Rosenthal was four-months pregnant, starving, bone-tired, cold, filthy and afraid when an SS officer in big black boots and a crisp uniform appeared before the barracks in Auschwitz with a loudspeaker in hand.

All pregnant women line up, he barked. Line up, line up — your food portions are being doubled.

“Can you imagine?” Miriam asks. “Even women who were not pregnant stepped forward. I was standing with my younger cousin, but I wouldn’t go. She says, ‘Miriam, what are you doing?’ ”

“Something was holding me back. Someone was watching over me. I feel maybe my mother, maybe God. Two hundred women stepped forward and 200 women went to the gas chamber. And I don’t know why I didn’t step forward.

“I have asked rabbis. I have asked some big people and no one can give me an answer. If you believe in God, then God did it. If you believe it was my parents, then it was my parents, which is what I believe.”

A striking story for the morning.

Canadian Newscast Gives Drunken Potato Chip Theft Serious Investigative Journalism Treatment | The Big Lead

Shut it down. The Canadian Emmy news awards are a wrap. (That’s a thing, right?) CTV must have had a few slow days this June since they committed a 3-minute segment to two drunken college girls stealing a bag of potato chips from a garage. Everyone involved is amazing.

“Illicit chip tastings…”

HAHAHAHA!!! Oh man, does any know if the Truly branded BBQ chips are that good?
